Petya Ransomware looks to pick up where #Wannacry left off

Already affecting devices in six European countries and a prominent pharmaceutical company in the U.S., the Petya Ransomware attack looks to take advantage of the same weaknesses as the #Wannacry Ransomware attack.

Like #Wannacry, which affected several hundred devices in Europe and in the US just a little over a month ago, this new strain of Ransomware-dubbed Petya- is trying to get into the same “Eternal Blue” vulnerability that allowed for #Wannacry attack to spread so vastly. Thankfully, as it stands currently, this strain doesn’t appear to be as large as #Wannacry, mostly due to the vigilant action either done following an attack or as an act of prevention.

As Petya continues to spread, researchers, however, are fearing it could be detrimental than #Wannacry. As #Wannacry had a switch that limited the spread once a device was affected, Petya doesn’t appear to have this switch leading to the belief that it will cause more damage initially. In addition, it appears that it aims to attack the master file compared to smaller files with #Wannacry, that if successfully attacked, limits the rebutting of a machine until the ransomware is paid. Due to this fact it makes it even more crucial to have a back-up in place as a device will be defenseless at this point.

We’ve said it once and we’ll say it again, Back-Up is your best defense against Ransomware attacks. Whether it may be via backup tapes or via cloud service, backing-up data is of utmost importance to have access to data should (when) a Ransomware attack occurs. Lincoln Archives is committed to continuously adapting and ensuring we have the best information protection services available to our clients and together, with our recently added Data Breach Protection service, we look forward to offering an even stronger Back-Up service through Barracuda to help prevent against Ransomware and other Data Breaches.
