Protect your information from ransomware attacks

One opened email. One accidental click. One Download. Whatever the cause may have been, you are now facing encrypted files all across your system. To make matters worse, a ransom is being asked for any access to these files.

Ransomware attacks, like the one described above, are happening so often in the last few years, so much so, that the headlining article in the Buffalo News on January 1st, 2017, was Hackers target local firms, governments, grandparents by Dan Herbeck. This article discusses how Ransomware attacks are not limited to large corporations, but rather all computer-even one’s personal computer can be open to a ransomware attack. The importance of backup services described throughout this article is also articulated by the recent article, Ransomware: a tale of two victims written by Lincoln Archives’ President, William Palisano, published in the Buffalo Law Journal’s Special Report: Cyber Security. Leading his expertise in the data protection industry, William speaks to the different outcomes that can result with Ransomware attacks.

An IBM Corp. report cited in the article, Hackers target local firms, governments, grandparents, mentions an average of 4,000 ransomware attacks occur every day in the US and estimated cyber criminals would make $1 billion in 2016. The report also stated “Businesses, medical facilities, school districts and other institutions across the country paid an estimated $209 million in ransom to cyber hackers” The information coupled with the statement made by the former IT Director of the Niagara County Health Department, Lawrence Helwig, which described how the hackers making money off of entities that have insufficient backup systems.

Bill Palisano, shares his expertise around data protection with Ransomware: A tale of Two Victims. As revealed in the article, the ways in which data is protected prior to an attack can make a huge difference in accessing data. For one company because some confidential information was stored on some employee’s desktop and not the company’s server, the decision was made to pay the ransom to get access to this information back, but for another company because they had their information back up with the services from Lincoln Archives they were able to get their system back and running the next business day.

Both articles focus on the importance and the essential role a secure backup system plays in protecting your information. Having a system in place not only assist with an attack but provides assurance on a daily basis information is being guarded. The data protection services of Cloud-Based Backup & Recovery and Back-Up Tape Services provide options to best fit an organization’s needs.
