“Okay, let’s all take a deep breath.  Certainly, the Covid-19 pandemic an unprecedented event.  Things have been changing rapidly, tension is high, and we’ve been starved for facts and numbers.   As a society, when there is uncertainty and a lack of factual information, we tend to ‘fill in the gaps’ with whatever ‘news’ we have access to.  Some of it may not be completely true and tension grows.  We need to be careful about this.   Up till now, the response (and directives from different local/statewide authorities) has been very short term, and inconsistent; further enhancing tension.

 

The US is now deploying massive testing capacity to start to collect data, and start compiling facts and figures, quickly.  In any situation, you have to know where you’re at, right now, facts, before creating and executing any long term response plan, measuring success, and pivoting where necessary.   And pivot, we will.  Consistency will reign.

As we start to see facts and figures, we may be surprised, either in a good way or a in a bad way.  The numbers may look ugly in the beginning.  Be prepared for it.  They will get better.  We will move forward and we will prevail.  And we will learn from this.

I have a sign on my family room wall at home.  When I saw it in NYC, 5 years ago, I had to have it. I have and always will believe what is says:  “Tough times don’t last.  Tough people do.”   And we will.

Let’s take another deep breath, look out for one another, be optimistic, and notice and appreciate how nice we can be to each other in times of challenge, like now.”
